Common problems

Something is wrong. Start here.

These pages help you work out what is actually happening, in plain English, before you spend money on it. Sometimes the honest answer is that nothing is broken.

The most expensive mistake in this category is fixing the wrong problem. "Our email is unreliable" is usually authentication rather than the provider, and moving providers to fix it costs money and solves nothing. "My site is not on Google" is four different problems with four different fixes.

Each page below walks the likely causes in the order they actually occur, tells you what you can check yourself, and is honest about when a symptom is not a problem at all.

The pages here cover the symptoms that are worth a written diagnosis. The wider problems we get called about, an inherited setup nobody can log into, accounts and licences that no longer match who works there, a leaver whose access is still live, are handled under managed IT, technical cleanup and security and identity rather than written up as a checklist, because the answer depends almost entirely on what you already have.

A note on diagnosis

None of these pages can tell you with certainty what is wrong with your specific setup, and any page claiming otherwise is overselling. Systems fail for overlapping reasons, and the obvious cause is often not the real one.

What these pages do is narrow it down and stop you being sold a rebuild when you needed a setting changed. If you work through one and the answer is "leave it alone", that is a good outcome and we would rather you reached it than not.
